I've come around a post on Medium recently about the importance of finishing well.
Importance of finishing well because of
- you owe it to yourself and when you don't finish well/put all that you have into it now, why do you think you will in the future?
- you owe it to everyone to supported you along the way
- you owe it to the profession itself. Masters appreciate what they do and the profession itself deserves that you treat it well and if you decide to do it, you put your all into it
Finishing has always been kind of a weakness for me. Most of the times, I am the person to get a bit loose in the final steps or already stop early. In recent years that changed. It started in different areas, like personal projects and expanded to sports and other small situations. If you decide to do it, do it right or not at all.
No one needs half ass. I am not saying that when you set out for a smaller goal or so (i.e. making a simple food that you need to turn it into a 5 course dinner), but whatever you set out to do, do it right.
This morning I woke up and it was raining. Three hours later, I was supposed to run an half marathon. Just to provide you with perspective, I knew I was going to make it and also half way decent, I did practice, but not as much as I could have + my baseline fitness level is also not there where it should be. So, considering it was raining, I was actually close in just not going there.
Nevertheless, I decided to follow my morning preparation and just see how the weather goes along meanwhile. Turns it, the rain stopped and even some sunshine appeared between the clouds. Step 1: achieved. How dare me that I just throw all my practice away and sacrifices from the last month.
In the actual race I started out way too fast and even needed to stop for a few steps. I was close in actually throwing in and going home, as it will never be a good time and why be disappointed in the end? Turns out, I actually didn't have such a bad time after all. No idea how that happened and it felt that I was way slower, but in the end, I at least got a halfway decent time and pushed myself probably almost completely to the limit. I say almost, bc I guess there is always more, but I also spent the rest of the day just lying on the couch with pain everywhere. So, I gave a lot! Plus, besides my too speedy first 5km, the last 2 kilometres were the fastest.
Finish well!
Namaste.
